The Vineyards
We strongly believe that good wine results from the way in which the vineyards are tended to, so they are worked by hand rather than using techniques requiring the use of machinery. Only organic fertilizers are employed, while vine diseases are prevented by using natural copper and sulphur-based products. The yield is controlled by means of manual thinning of the bunches in order to help the grapes ripen to perfection.
Our vineyards lie in the heart of the hills of the Langhe, a prime growing area renowned throughout the world for the high quality of its wines. They are spread over the villages of Grinzane Cavour, Serralunga d’Alba, Novello and Monforte d’Alba, and the town of Alba.
The vineyards growing the Nebbiolo from which Barolo wine is made are located in Grinzane Cavour, Serralunga d’Alba and Novello, at altitudes varying between 250 and 350 m above sea level. The “Ginestre” vineyard in Grinzane Cavour faces south on marly-calcareous soil; the “Baudana” vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba faces south-west on sandyish calcareous soil, which gives Barolo more marked aromas; the “Sotto Castello” vineyard in Novello faces south-south-west on mainly marly soil, while the southernmost area of the vineyard is less fertile, with a higher content of tufa and limestone.
Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and Freisa are grown on vineyards at an altitude of around 350 m in the village of Monforte d’Alba. The “Chiese” vineyard is divided into two slopes: the first - facing south - is planted with Nebbiolo, while the second - facing south-west - is planted with the Barbera variety. The vineyard lies in a warm spot, well-sheltered from cold currents; the soil is mainly marly, with traces of active limestone, providing the wine with substance and structure. The south-facing part of the “Ornati” vineyard is planted with Barbera and Freisa, while Dolcetto is grown in the area facing south-west. The soil here is marly and sandy.
Dolcetto is grown at an altitude of 350 m on the marly, calcareous soil of the south-facing “Madonna Como” vineyard in an outlying district of the town of Alba.
The Chardonnay and Arneis vineyards, on the other hand, are to be found in the Roero, the area of hills to the left of the River Tanaro. They lie in medium-sunny positions at an altitude of 250-350 m, where the soil is mainly sandy, tending to gravelly.
