The “Sottocastello di Novello” vineyard is located on the eastern side of the municipality of Novello, where the most prestigious areas for the cultivation of Nebbiolo for Barolo are located. Originating towards the end of the Tertiary Basin of Liguria and Piedmont, and therefore between the Tortonian and Messinian periods, this formation is known as Sant’Agata Fossil Marl laminate. It enjoys south, south-easterly exposure at an average altitude of 400 metres above sea level and the soil is quite deep, well-drained, medium-consistency limestone.
Only organic fertilisers are used in the vineyard, while natural copper and sulphur-based products are used to prevent diseases of the vine. Production is regulated by manual thinning of the bunches in order to promote perfect ripening.
